In the Bhagavad Gita, the three gunas are driving the ego: Tamas (the force of apathy, ignorance, inertia); Rajas (the force of aggression, energy, movement); Sattva (the force of peace, knowledge, and enlightenment). In Classical Yoga, all three gunas should be transcended  to achieve pure detachment from the ego.
