In the Bhagavad Gita, the three gunas are driving the ego: Tamas (the force of apathy, ignorance, inertia); Rajas (the force of aggression, energy, movement); Sattva (the force of peace, knowledge, and enlightenment). In Classical Yoga, all three gunas should be transcended to achieve pure detachment from the ego. In the Saguna Bhakti movement, the gunas are not seen as something to be transcended, but should instead be mastered and integrated in favor of a higher purpose.
